The USB-C E-Bike: Why Convenience is the Next Frontier for E-bikes

Here is why e-bikes for the urban cyclists are likely going to become less powerful and have less range.

The new Ampler lightweight e-bike, one of this year's Eurobike Award winners, stands out because it charges with a USB-C cord. This is cool because most e-bikes require a specific charger, whereas this one can use the same charger as most laptops and phones. This increases the convenience and usability of the bike. This has me thinking: so many of the e-bikes I see out in the world are big, clunky, and powerful, even in urban settings. However, I would bet that the next frontier for everyday commuter e-bikes is going to be focused on making them lighter weight, cleaner, and easier to use.

Take a look at the e-bikes that people are riding around cities and using for transportation; they are heavy as hell, clunky, and not intuitive to ride or live with. Most people write this off because most of these are usually cheap, mail-order bikes. However, I think there's an argument to be made that as the e-bike market continues to grow, the percentage of customers who would be willing to trade motor power and range for a cleaner overall package that is easier to live with is increasing.

I believe that this is the case because the early adopters of any tech item are usually the power users who are excited for a new solution to a problem. This segment of the market, I suspect, is attracted to the high power and long-range numbers that are common on a lot of these e-bikes. However, now I think we can safely say that e-bikes have passed the state of early adoption, and more and more casual consumers are looking into purchasing their first e-bike.

Moving forward, I suspect we will see more and more e-bikes across the price/quality spectrum that are designed for this type of cyclist who wants convenience and ease of use. The Ampler USB-C charging e-bike is a good example of a higher-end e-bike that is marketed to this segment. At the extreme budget side of the e-bike market, I would predict that we would start to see more bikes with smaller batteries, more ergonomic riding positions, and lower overall weight make their way onto the streets and bike paths of urban areas. I hope that if this shift happens, it will provide a world where more people can integrate some level of cycling into their lives; and the world will be a better place because of it.
